Disney and Pixar's newest, and highly anticipated, feature film, Soul, will be premiering exclusively on Disney+ on Christmas Day 2020. The film stars Joe Gardner, a middle school band teacher who dreams of being a professional jazz musician. However, his opportunity is stifled when Joe is transported to The Great Before, where souls get their uniqueness. Joe must find his way back to Earth so his dream can be realized.
According to an article on D23.com, during a virtual press day the team behind this unique film gave us a special look. Some things to note: while this film delves into the same sort of genre of asking the big questions, it is not related to 2015 film, Inside Out. It will be dealing with some of humanity's deep inner struggles but it is definitely exploring a new realm that Inside Out did not tap into in its film. As Pixar's first Black protagonist, the filmmakers had a delicate task at hand. They assembled a large team of cultural and music consultants to be able to do justice to the character and Black culture. There is also the music to contend with: a fusion of original jazz compositions and an original score by Oscar winning musicians.
This promises to be a film worth watching! Looking forward to getting to stream it on Disney+ come December!
